Pink Brown

Work in Progress
Oil on Linen
24x30

I've been working on this painting for the last week. I think I need a break from it in order to gain a fresh perspective since I've been staring at it for so long. I'm waiting for that ah-ha moment when I can absolutely say what it needs for completion.

This painting is very similar to my last few smaller ones with the same color scheme. It's time to move onto something different, turn the page, and go on a different path into a new landscape. Maybe hide the Pink Brown by Gamblin for awhile.

They just keep getting more & more so. Thanks for clueing us in on the pink brown...you've sure made it work for you. As I scan my blogger-dashboard your work stands out with it's ~warm glow~.

Hi Janelle..the color is gorgeous. Pink brown becomes you. The only thing I might say is stroke size and type...examine the tree and grass. You will see it better in person and know. I just wonder if less might be more. You know I love your work... and I would expect you to critique me.
cheers! L

Another wonderful picture. I particularly like the greeny blues in the sky which soften the scene and add to the drama. One never knows when to change the palette. I seem to go "on" about signature style, and having the same palette isn't a bad thing in that regard. Some people use the same 3 colors over and over and create some amazing pictures. I can understand though, because my pictures have been having that diox purple cast too much and I think I should change my shadows to a bit more blue. Art is so hard and so much fun all at the same time!

Hi Marion, Thanks and blessings to you too!

Hi Betsy, Love today's cardinal against the snow. You're an artful photographer!

Hi Jill, Maybe I'm using the warm glow in paintings because it's so cold outside! Must be nice in Florida!

Hi Loriann, Your comment intrigued me! I've been thinking it over and believe you've solved my dilemma regarding painting big. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

Hi Catherine, One of the things I love about your paintings is the distinct feel of warm and cool. That's what gives your paintings such atmosphere!
It's hard to switch to different colors when some are just working so well.

Loriann's point is excellent-bigger paintings need bigger strokes. That way the ratio/amount of information you include stays the same as you size up. And even a few small cool passages will balance and make the warms sing.

Hi Deborah, Thank you so much for telling me this! When Loriann made her point, it made so much sense. And now that I hear the same thing from you, I feel I can move on. Bigger paintings have always been kind of frustrating to me. I can't believe I couldn't see this on my own. But I value your discerning eye. Thank you from the bottom of my heart also!!!

lol..Janelle, your post made me laugh..haha "hide the brown pink for awhile"! I understand what you mean. We artists have to mix it up in order to feel that we are "doing our job". One of my mentors changes the colors on his palette often. It drives his students a little nutty--but he explained.."I don't want to become complacent"
Your work is evocative and etherial. I always look forward to seeing what you are doing!

nice work Janelle. Your pastels are certainly equall to your oils.
What is your decision on doing oils over pastels and vice versa?
Great blog.

So is pink brown a Gamblin color? I bought a bunch of Gamblin paints when our Dick Blick closed. I got them for 70% off. I have really enjoyed some of the unique colors. I think I've finally resolved some of my recent issues and will be able to post soon. I did paint a treeline which was partially inspired by your work! I was also in a zone. It was great. BTW I just read about five of your recent posts. Great stuff.

Hi Celeste, Changing colors is like going to a different country. But it's good for the artistic soul. Yes, we do need to switch it up sometimes. I can see you do this often, which is why is like seeing what you're up to!

Hi Gary, I loved doing pastel, but the dust really got me. I was inhaling it all the time and felt I needed a change. Also, there's something about using a brush with oil paints that I love. Thanks for your comment!

Hi Vic, Yes, this one is lighter. But I think it's because when I photographed it, it wasn't dry yet. Maybe I should post it again sometime because it's actually a litter darker now that it's dry. Thanks!

Hi Neetzy, Yes, aren't Gamblin paints sensuous? I think I love all their colors. And at 70 percent off, who could resist? (Lucky you!) I think you're work is really awesome. I know it's hard for you to find time to paint since you're always teaching, but I look forward to seeing your work!
