Monet's Mornings on the Seine

Branch of the Seine near Giverny (Mist)
Claude Monet
circa 1897

I snapped this picture five minutes before closing time last Wednesday. I wanted to take more pictures, but the guards were shooing my daughter and I out of the gallery (sigh). We went to the Art Institute of Chicago on that snowy, cold day to view the the Arts and Crafts exhibit called Apostles of Beauty. It was a great exhibit which gave an overview of the movement from William Morris to Frank Lloyd Wright. Unfortunately, no photography was allowed.

I can never visit the Art Institute without seeing a Monet. Just laying eyes on one of his works fills me with inspiration for months. The Mornings on the Seine series are my very favorite. I like these even more than his haystacks or waterlilies. Because there is a certain meditative quality that draws me into these misty paintings.

That's beautiful..misty is a good way to describe it! And how sneaky, getting those pics! :)

I had the good fortune to see an incredible traveling Monet exhibit at The Art Institute of Chicago some years back. His work, just like any other, of course, is fabulous in person.

(I sneak pics in museums, as well!Shh...don't tell!)

Janelle it's so interesting to see you post this painting...it becomes so clear where you derive (at least some of) your inspiration. Your pieces have that same sense of beauty and peace and quiet that is here.
So glad you got the photo too. :)

yes! does this put you in a mind to do some blue paintings? I used to stand in front of a Monet for really long stretches--you can forget where you are, can't you! Thanks for sharing this--(I take photos in museums too..I finally learned to turn the chime off my camera. lol)

oooooh that's one Monet's best. I am glad that you picked one from his series on the Epte/Seine. You are so right about its meditative quality... similar to your work in that way.

Hi Betsy, Ha, that's part of the fun!

Hi Willow, You were here in Chicago for the Monet traveling exhibit. So was I! (Thought you looked familiar).

Hi Karen, Yes, I drool over Monet's work. If he were still alive, I'd probably be a stalker!

Hi Jill, I see some of the beautiful blues and purples in this painting. Very similar to the colors you use in your landscapes!

Hi Rahina, Yes, this painting is so close in values. I think he was indeed a Master.

Hi Celeste, Time does seem suspended when viewing a Monet, doesn't it? There's an other-worldly feel about them.

Hi Manon, It's so disappointing when they don't let you take pictures. They're just being picture Nazis.

Hi Loriann, Isn't it a wonderful painting? In some ways, it reminds me of your river paintings.

Hello Janelle,Thanks for sharing this great painting. I haven't seen it in way too long.
Love you previous post, "Grace." The passion and also inner calm you paintings provoke always make me want to be there.

Hi Janelle.
Thank you for posting that beautiful Monet painting. I love his work and haven`t seen this one before. And as for taking a photograph of it, that was brilliantly done. I went to an exhibition recently and they had two of his there. But to take a photo, that was out of the question. It looked like they had armed guards there so I didn`t try it. All the best Janelle.
Vic.
