Linen instead of Canvas

Ridge Path
8x10
Oil on Linen

This painting is the first I'm posting that is done on linen instead of canvas.  I couldn't believe what a difference it made to the glazing process.  It's more expensive than what I'm used to painting on which is acrylic primed smooth canvas.

But the results were worth it to me and I've quickly become addicted.  So what am I going to do with the canvases already in my possession?  I might give them to my brother.  In the last few years we started hauling out canvases and paints whenever there is a get-together or family party.  People who haven't touched a paintbrush since they were kids are encouraged to add "something - anything" to the canvas.  Usually I start out by painting some sort of form, or my brother will, and pretty soon people get caught up in the fun.

At the end of the party, we'll draw numbers and someone gets to keep the painting.  Everyone seems to love it!

Thanks for the info. I have been toying with the idea of linen, now I will try it. Honor

Wow Janelle, that glazing is really working for you. This has an awesome glow on the linen.
The family paint-together sounds fun. We like to play pictionary on a lg. whiteboard.

Hi Janelle,

This is such a stunning work. I can see why you like the linen so much. Very impressive. And as Jill said in her comment, there is an awesome glow on the linen.

Your family get togethers sound like such fun and what a wonderful way to generate all kinds of creativity!

Great work Janelle!!!

I totally agree, it's nearly impossible to go back to canvas after working on the linen.

Keep going with the glazing!
And, Sunrise, the previous post, looks so well resolved! The water especially is wonderful in this one.
Congrats on that solo show!

Hi Honor, Yes, do try it and let me know what you think. I'm totally hooked!

Hi Jill, Thanks! Hmm, pictionary is so much fun. I haven't played in ages. Have to remember that!

Kathleen, Thanks! I'm so glad you and Jill noticed a glow in the painting. That's what I'm aiming for. Painting at our get togethers is fun. The painting ususally takes on a life of it's own.

Hi Karen, Thanks for your encouragement! It means a lot, especially on days when I'm really struggling with this new method.

This is really really beautiful. I love the peaceful feeling it leaves with me, like being first on the scene and leaving all the craziness behind.

Are you doing these plein air?

Don't throw out your old acrylic primed canvas. Add a layer of oil paint and it will respond almost as good as oil primed linen.

The painting is beautiful and luminous! I have been told that linen is an amazing surface. I just haven't "taken the plunge". I bought a lot of pre-stretched canvasses when they were 70% off at Dick Blick. I will paint on them.

I'm afraid I will get spoiled by linen. I will buy it when I sell a painting or two.

Hi Susan, I don't do these plein air, but I get my ideas from my photographs of nature. The process I'm using, requires drying times between layers, so it takes much longer. Thanks for your comments and for the advice on priming my canvases with oil. I'll definitely try it!

Hi Neetzy, I just thought I had to try the linen and now I'm hooked, but I would hate to mess one up. I love your California shots on your blog. Keep showing us more, more, more!

Uh-oh, she's addicted to linen... So I am. I don't glaze, though, so very curious what makes it better for glazing?

Janelle Goodwin said...

Hi Celeste, Yes, I'm finding the support is so very important to the painting. Enjoyed seeing your workshop pictures!

Hi Laurel, Thank you so much for the Bella Sinclair Award. I'm very touched and honored!!!

Hi Jala, I think the linen is so much better for glazing because it accepts the paint and medium better. It doesn't tend to pool up. Hope you're enjoying England, you lucky, lucky girl!

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
